Memorial Day Weekend Greetings

It's hard to believe, but June is almost upon us. Summer vacations have already started, although it won't be until mid-June, after high school graduations, that the season really picks up.

The island's next big event is coming up the first weekend in June -- our annual Ocrafolk Festival of Music & Storytelling. If you're on the island, stop by and say hello.

I noticed on the festival line up that you will be sharing a story. I will be on the island and would like to catch this...what time will you be presenting? Also, I have been hearing that your tours are filling up and that there is a minimum. Should we call ahead to make sure we can reserve a spot? We should not want to miss this new addition on the history of the island.

  2. Thank you for the kind words. We will be presenting the harrowing 1837 story of the wreck of the steamboat "Home" (one of the worst maritime disasters ever on Ocracoke's beach) at noon on Friday. I will be accompanied by two outstanding performers, Miss Lou Ann Homan-Saylor, renowned storyteller, and John Golden, accomplished musician and song-writer.

Several older native islanders will also be on hand to share stories of storms and shipwrecks that they experienced, or stories that were passed down from years gone by.

About the history/ghost walk tours -- you can always call ahead and reserve a space (252-928-5541). Generally there is space available, but not always, especially as the season progresses. So call ahead, or stop by the shop to sign up, just to be sure. Hope to see you soon!
