Ocean Water

Just in case you've forgotten, the Ocracoke beach in July is super. Yesterday the water was so clear you could stand up to your neck and see your toes. It looked like the Caribbean...bright, blue-green, and sparkling. And the waves were wonderful -- large but gentle, just right for swimming and floating and bobbing about.

Today the waves were larger and a tad rougher, and a stronger littoral current tried to carry us south, and it wasn't as clear, but it was just as warm and fun. Lou Ann likes to squeal and laugh as big waves crash over us. We knew we could come back again soon, so we didn't stay in quite as long today.

Now it's time to do a little work.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is Lou Ann's account of installing an old-fashioned pitcher pump. You can read it here.

    Hi There,

I'm a first time Visitor to your blog, I found it by searching restaurants on Ocracoke Island.

I'll be visiting there with my family the 2nd week of August. This won't be our first trip there, as my grandfather grew up on Ocracoke we've been many times, but I haven't been since I was little girl.

I'm really looking forward to the trip, and the beach! We live in PA now, so I relish any chance I get to go to the beach. Is there a certain beach or area of the beach you would recommend? You seem like you might know ;)

    Thanks,
    Mia

  3. Hi Mia,

I think it's safe to assume that your grandfather is Buddy Howard, and your great-grandfather was Lafayette Howard, which of course, makes your gr-gr-grandfather Mr. Tommy. Please stop by and say hello. Mr. Tommy's parents and grandparents are buried across the street from Village Craftsmen.

The lifeguard beach is the most popular section of Ocracoke Island for swimming, but we have 16 miles of beach in the National Seashore, and you can swim just about anywhere. But please be aware that ocean swimming is not like swimming in a pool. Be sure to know what to do if there are rip currents. And be sure to enjoy your time on Ocracoke!

Wow! You're right my grandfather is Bud Howard! And you seem to know more about my family history than I do! :) We'll definitely be sure to stop by and say hello. Thank you so much for your advice about the beach. See you in August!

    Mia
