Dagwood & Herb

The spirit of community lives on at Ocracoke. Much like the comics characters, Dagwood and Herb Woodley, who frequently borrow each other's tools, we often do the same here on the island. About 25 years ago my neighbor, Al, had just gotten a brand new leather tool belt, but he didn't have a project at the time. I did, however, so Al loaned me the belt. I've had it ever since! He told me he'd let me know when he needed it back, but he seemed to do just fine without it, so I've kept it.

A few days ago, as I was putting on the tool belt to begin a minor carpentry project, I noticed that the stitching on one of the nail pockets was coming undone. I felt bad about it, so I called Al up. "Al," I said, "I thought you should know. You're tool belt is coming apart. It's time for you to buy a new one."

To think about a month ago, your island experienced a snowstorm!!!. Today, you are launching a few home improvement type projects and committees are mincing words and interpreting the color purple on map legends! How many people are replacing frozen shrubs ?? Did the snow kill many flowering shrubs? Will OI have much of a Spring??

Speaking of colors, my county has a bright yellow PAYT trash bag-- type system -- a nice indicator of responsible citizens.

They buy the bag and choose not to overstuff their can. They treat the overflow in the proper manner by getting yellow bags.

In the mean time, It is an exciting time for the island much; like President Obama having to do a big thing for those now --to make way for the future.

Ask not what your city can do for you. Ask what You can do for your city.

(the use of the word you is meant in a collective noun grammatical sense not the Singular you as in you -- but you guys, you'all.) All the literature about Ocracoke bills it as a tourist mecca type of place. To me, there is a responsibility of those that visit to understand and follow the the rules. Even here, this place has rules.

  3. The daffodils are budding as I write. They should be flowering any day now. We're looking forward to temperatures in the mid-60s again today. Spring should be beautiful, though I'm sure we'll have another cold snap or two before Easter.
