Joke

Ocracoke is an interesting place. Yesterday afternoon as I stepped out the front door of the Village Craftsmen I greeted one of the island's sixth graders walking up Howard Street. She continued toward the Community Store, and I turned down Lawton Lane. After not very many feet I heard footsteps behind me. It was the sixth grader.

"I have a joke for you," she said with a smile.

"The famous philosopher Rene Descartes walks into a bar. The bartender says, 'Would you like a beer, sir?'

"'I think not,' replies Descartes, and with that...he vanishes."

Granted, this joke didn't elicit the belly laughs we had Sunday night telling stories about clams with false teeth (and you may be shaking your head if you haven't studied philosophy), but it does illustrate the interesting makeup of this small island community.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is Captain Rob's essay, "Schooner Windfall Sails into the Final Sunset." You can read it here:http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news052110.htm.

Couple of questions ... after Hurricane Isabel, how long was it before ferry service was restored from Hatteras? Also, approximately how long was it before off-island homeowners could return to the island?

Wow that is wonderful the younger generation appreciates a good joke.

A string walks into a bar and orders a drink.

the bartender replies Hey we don't serve our kind in this place beat it String.

The string leaves and twists about loosening up a few ends twisting into a knot.

Walks back into the the Bar. Hey the bartender shouts, didn't I tell you to leave Aren't you that string I just kicked out of the bar ten minutes ago.

    Sir, I'm a frayed knot.

  3. Re. ferry service to the island after a storm: I can't remember how soon after Isabel the ferries began to operate. That was an unusual situation because of the new inlet on Hatteras that prevented people from traveling north from Hatteras village (or south from the northern beaches to Hatteras village).

In general ferries resume operation as soon as facilities and vessels are inspected and repaired as needed, and as soon as the infrastructure & utilities on Ocracoke (roads, electric power, municipal water, etc.) are repaired and operating properly. Generally full time residents are allowed to return first in order to inspect and repair property. Off-island homeowners are normally allowed back at the same time or shortly after. Visitors are permitted on the island as soon as the island is able to provide necessary services.

I'm sorry, but I can't remember specific details about the return after Isabel.

This reminds me of another joke. A lady walks into Howard's Pub with a duck under her arm and the bartender says, "Where did you get the pig?" and the lady says. "That's not a pig, it's a duck" and the bartender responds "I was talking to the duck", hahaha.

  7. Rene Descartes made the philosophical observation, "Cogito, ergo sum" [I think, therefore I am]. So when he says to the bartender, "I think not" the humorous implication is that he would then cease to exist (he would vanish).

Class, we will now use a word from our vocabulary list to make a sentence.

Johnny please use the word fascinate in a sentence.

Little johnny thinks for a moment, beams and then announces " I have a shirt with nine buttons but I can only fasten eight."
