Aquamarine

Lately the ocean has literally been "aquamarine," a magnificent pale blue-green color. Oftentimes on the Outer Banks the powerful waves churn up fine particles of sand as they crash against the shoreline. This gives the water a deeper, less vibrant color. But now and then conditions are just right and the ocean becomes transparent, even as waves roll up on the beach. Yesterday was like that. Standing in chest deep water I could see my feet on the bottom...until a wave gently picked me up and then set me back down.

It was Zen-like.

This month's Ocracoke Newsletter is the story of the 1913 wreck of the 6-masted schooner, George W. Wells. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news072110.htm.

Where is the unofficial nude beach on Ocracoke, and does the NPS accept it.

    Thanks

Anywhere if you don't get caught!

  3. Because Ocracoke has a few areas of beach that are some distance from public parking areas, nude sunbathers have, over the years, discovered places of solitude to enjoy the surf and sun au naturel. As you seem to understand, there is no official nude beach on Ocracoke. And the NPS will issue tickets to those who are nude in the presence of persons of the opposite sex (rangers often patrol the beach in pairs...a man and a woman).

Respect for others, and vigilance, would seem to be prudent advice for anyone planning to enjoy our beach sans clothing.

I remember one of your blog entries about using a mesh bag crab pot float and sinker to hold bathing suits while swimming.

My husband and I have used that trick many times on the remote areas of the beach, so great tip.

Thankfully, when I enjoy the beautiful, natural beaches @ Ocracoke, the folks I do see are respectfully wearing appropriate bathing suit/summer wear attire.

If someone wants to go "au naturel", that person needs to go to different beach and leave Ocracoke for the rest of us to enjoy. Please!

I'd think there would be plenty of beach for everyone to enjoy. It is public property, right? If I would come upon nude sunbathers (assuming they were there first), my choice would be to join them or find another stretch of beach - there's plenty for us all.

That is why I was asking about an appropriate area.

We have never nor would we ever offend or intrude on anyones enjoyment of OI's beach.

Have you ever seen some of the nudest camps? Not pretty!!! Some people should keep their clothing on. :)

The truth is, most people should keep their clothes on, but isn't it deliciously wicked?

I have heard that the nps has slacked off on issuing citations to nudies. Is this true?
