Cell Pones

A couple of days ago I happened to run into the CenturyLink phone guy at Eduardo's Taco stand. I asked him if he knew anything about AT&T cell phone service on Ocracoke. He didn't know for sure, but thought their installation was complete, so as far as he knew AT&T phones ought to work on the island.

Later that same day I spoke with someone else who said he had heard that AT&T cell phone service was still not up and running.

Since no islanders have AT&T contracts, no one I speak with has any up-to-date information. Maybe one of our readers who has been on the island in the last week or so can shed some light on this.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is a history of the Ocracoke Preservation Society. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.comnews042111.htm.

If I am not mistaken, Consumer Reports magazine has reported that AT&T has very poor service basically nationwide. Unless things have changed, I would hope O'cockers would avoid changing providers. If you can't receive service from off the island, what good is it? Like the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

As an AT&T user, service has vastly improved since the CR article. However, neither they nor Verizon have great customer relations. I had Verizon for my computer, and they charged me an extra month's service after I cancelled - and then charged me $45to cut a refund check.

I have been on the island for a few days. I have ATT with an Iphone and Ipad and both work very well now. I have 3G service in the village and get ATT service up the island and half way to Swan Quarter. I used to have to bring my Verizon "Ocracoke phone" but no more

ATT now works on ocracoke island. I just signed up for service today! They do not have a local number available yet but as far as coverage goes there is full bars of 3g.

  5. Here is another lost comment from Wilbur:

Well according to AT&Ts coverage map, there is no service

Sandcruiser: any chance you are roaming?

You can run a test of your broadband service here and report back to the FCC whether there is any service

I do not think I am roaming since I only get AT&T logo with 3G at the top of my phone and Ipad. I have switched off wifi at my cottage in Sound Shores and get 2-3 bars with 3G. I cannot do a speed test since this requires flash and Apple does not allow flash on their products. I really think ATT is here.

it is att, they just haven't updated the coverage map. just like how it shows no 3g is available between norfolk va and nags head nc and that isn't true. I looked at my phone the other day coming back from a dr appointment and i had full 3g from grandy nc to nags head.

ATT works here, just not so well near the pony pens.
