Live Oaks

Live oaks are considered by many to be the most impressive trees on Ocracoke Island. At least six of these majestic trees qualify for membership in the Live Oak Society. Three reside on Howard Street, two at Springer's Point, and one at Old Hammock.

Curious as to new construction on Howard St. Since Howard St. is in the historic district on Ocracoke would a new home have to be built to the State Historical Society's standards? What organization decides whether a building has to be reviewed by the State or not?

    1. Much of Ocracoke village is a National Historic District. Rehabilitation of a contributing structure in the district is eligible for state and federal tax credits, but there is no review board that dictates standards that must be followed.

speaking of oversite organizations, does any one ever think about how all these regulations have a negative effect on a family visiting ocracoke: THERE IS A 10% OCCUPANCY TAX, A SALTWATER FISHING LICENSE REQUIRED TO ENJOY MAYBE A ONCE IN A YEAR VACATION BUT FIRST YOU MIGHT HAVE TO FORK OVER A NEW %54.00 ROUND TRIP FERRY FEE...GOOD GRIEF IT COSTS A LOT JUST TO HAVE A NORMAL VACATION IN NC. ALL THIS MONEY OUT LAY CAN NOT BE HELPING TO EXPAND TOURISM!.........AND GASOLINE IS EXPENSIVE. SEE WHAT I MEAN?

    1. The only organization that reviews projects in the historic district is the NC State Preservation Office, and then only if the owner is applying for tax credits.

Seems when certain folks on O'cock don't want something built on the lake some have had to comply when other's have not......

    Hello Philip:
I have visited Ocracoke before and was wondering if the Live Oak trees at Springer's Point are the same kind of tree that grows on Vancouver Island, which are called "Garry Oaks". I'd be interested to know! I will be visiting your lovely Island in April and am looking forward to being there again!
