A Blessed Life

Many of our readers know Della Gaskill. She operates a small gift shop on her property next to the Assembly of God Church. Della was born on Ocracoke in 1937, and she has many stories to tell about "Growing up on Ocracoke Island" (that's the subtitle of her new book, A Blessed Life).

Della's book is full of fascinating local lore, island history, first-hand stories, and vintage photos. Chapter titles include "Hotcakes, Turtle Stew and Other Recipes for Love," "World War II Comes to Ocracoke," "The Storm of '44 and Other Storms at Ocracoke," "School Days," "The Ocracoke Ponies," "Figs, Figs and More Figs," and much more.

You can order a copy of Della's book directly from our web  site (, or purchase a copy at our store on Howard Street...or buy one from other merchants on the island. You'll be glad you did. A Blessed Life is the most recent addition to a wide selection of books about Ocracoke. This one is told by an island native, and that makes it extra special.

Our current Ocracoke Newsletter is an account of Infant & Childhood Mortality on Ocracoke. You can read it here:

  1. It's a GREAT book. Both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it and if you're reading this blog, then you'll most likely love this book too.

The Grand Dame of Ocracoke speaks. It is a delight to read - especially if you have ever talked to Della - it is like her telling you the stories. Love this lady - and her fig preserves and fig honey can't be beat!!

OK Debbie you gonna put a negative spin on this one??

Sounds like a lovely book that I plan to add to my collection next time I am on island.

  4. I started to order it, but the shipping is almost as much as the book! I guess I'll have to wait until I'm on Ocracoke again to purchase it ... but I really want to read it!!!!

  5. I am a lucky island visitor--I have been in Della's kitchen while she was cooking! Always love stopping by her place, and stopping by the Village Craftsman to see what new goodies are there and to try to catch you on the porch, Philip!

NC Mainlander will proudly add Della's book to my beloved library of O.I. books. I have been excited about this book for a long time and look so forward to reading it.
