Tax Hog

This month's Ocracoke Newsletter is a photo gallery of floats from past Ocracoke Island July 4th parades. Since publishing that article Al Scarborough showed me this picture of his 1993 float. Maybe some of our readers will remember it.

This "Tax Hog" float was a not-very-subtle statement about Ocracoke Island's high property tax assessments...and the "benefits" received. If I remember correctly the pig was fed wads of money. Out the other end came a talcum powder cloud of gas.

We're anticipating more creative floats this year...whether inspired by local politics, island culture, patriotic themes, or just good fun.

VERY clever float. Would love to see it in action. (Also note the clearly intentional misspelling of Hyde). It's always something, my little Roseanne Roseannadanna. :-) Keep 'em coming, Philip, as always.

Lower taxes would be possible if more people living on the island/in the county paid taxes and the tax burden was spread out. More high rise housing, increase the population density or charge fees to ride the Ferry It may be interesting to note what percentage of Hyde county residential units are not full time occupied by owners = percentage of rental units. Obama care lowers the cost to insure people that are sick because more healthy people are in the pool paying higher rates to lower the cost to those that need the medical services to live . Now if corporations paid more taxes it may help. They would have less money to throw around for charity events. How does one put a price on the quality of life on OI as it is today. Taxes paid divided by 364 of that daily rate would one consider "paying" for the quality of life - DD

This was my favorite float of all parades I've been too. It was pulled by waits, cleaners....OI service workes. It was so funny. Didn't win - as most political floats don't - but sure was funny.
Remember the Ocrawomen riding their bikes with various themes - right to bear arms (sleeveless), steal our gas - we'll woap your ass... Good times.
Hope this year's parade has some pazazz - last year - too many golf carts and not much imagination. But that said - the best parade around - for sure.
Looking forward to a good on'.

A simple search on the internet one will find statistical data regarding a 2012 Hyde county housing study. Other info regarding housing; roughly 25% of Hyde County housing is rental. One can project that if the rentals are seasonal the goods and services demands are seasonal but the infrastructure needs to be in place to accommodate the seasonal variations. If the rental properties are draining the resources perhaps a protocol to generate more revenue from this housing sector for example higher landlord license fees, short term parking decals higher fees for non residents etc. There is no doubt a system could be developed to generate a bed tax on rental properties and charges to allow extra cars parked in residential areas.
