Ocracoke Community Park

Last Saturday, at 12:30 pm, the Ocracoke Community Park celebrated its Grand Opening. The Park is a first-class facility...a community dream that came together because of many committed and dedicated individuals and organizations. It is amazing what the Ocracoke community has accomplished.

Here are a few photos I took on Saturday. I could have taken more, but I was so thoroughly enjoying the Blue Claws play baseball (they won!) that I forgot I had my camera with me.

You can read more about the Ocracoke Youth Center and The Community Park on their web site:  http://ocracokecommunitypark.org/. Still more needs to be done. You can help by following the link to make a donation.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is an article by island resident, Crystal Canterbury, about her very first visit to Portsmouth Village, on the last day of 2014. You can read Part I here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news042115.htm.

Youth Center. Basketball was the only team sport that existed before the baseball field. Now the basketball team was for boys probably. Now, the baseball activities are probably for boys too. I hope there are Team Sports for girls. The web site link, as far as I could tell did not mention how to join a team. Honestly, I do hope there is equal opportunity to engage both boys and girls in team sports.

The nearly five acres on which the youth center sits has a ten-year note, owner financed at 3%. The amount of debt the nonprofit organization owes was not mentioned in the article. Do you know how much the Youth center has spent in the construction of the facility?

Hmm. The county high school teams rent the facilities to play games and practice? The Little league teams are run by the Youth center non profit group I suppose.... The notion that organized competitive team sports " enough children live on the island..." is it the only way to engage children in Learning a sport... are there clinics to enroll in to learn the techniques of basketball and baseball? The possibilities are endless, archery and soccer. After all the headlines of football injuries and the like, soccer players on the whole are more athletic IMHO - that a 275lb line backer,How can anyone that big be considered physically fit????
