Horseshoe Crab

This past weekend Amy, David, Lachlan, and I were enjoying a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the South Point. Lachlan was exploring the edge of a deep pool connected to the ocean when he shouted for me to come see a large horseshoe crab.

David took this 31 second video of the giant arthropod making his way back to deeper water.

This month's Ocracoke Newsletter tells the delightful story of the 19th century "Stovepipe Hat" wreck. It has been told for years in books & magazines, but it probably never happened. You can read the story (and my research) here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news072115.htm.

  1. It's HUGE! Are they always that big or is that one particularly large?

we were in that area a few weeks ago kayaking and nearly all the horseshoes we saw consisted of a large crab with a smaller one attached to it

Is Lachlan a fourth grader??? If so, next year President Obama will give a National Park Pass to all fourth graders( i.e. Lachlan) in celebration of the 100th anniversary. According to statistics the Family road trip vacation to visit a National Park is on the decline. Is this a wake up call for America to get up out of the easy chair, move away from the computer and Occupy the Park Ranger with your questions and time while visiitng a National Park near or far from your Comfort Zone! Just Do it. It is a great experience.

    1. Lachlan will be a sixth grader. I hope fourth graders (and their parents) will take advantage of this offer.
