OPS Events

The Ocracoke Preservation Society hosts a number of informative and fun summertime events at the museum. These include museum tours, porch talks (history, wildlife, environmental issues, seafaring, pirates, storytelling, etc.), and kids' programs.

The OPS Museum is located near the Swan Quarter/Cedar Island ferry docks, across the parking lot from the National Park Service Visitors Center.

This month's Ocracoke Newsletter is the dramatic story of life-saver Rasmus Midgett and his rescue of the crew of the barkentine Priscilla in August, 1899. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news052116.htm

    1. No, only Wednesday's programs are specifically for kids. The museum tours typically include history of the island & the house, insights about daily life on the island, stories about shipwrecks, WWII, hurricanes, the island brogue, and more. Porch talks are almost all directed towards adults. E.g. my talk tomorrow will be about the US Life Saving Service, with an emphasis on one of the most daring rescues ever undertaken to save the lives of 6 sailors on a wrecked schooner. Check the OPS web site often for information about future tours and talks.

Thanks for explaining that. I am sure if was just for kids my grand parents would pass it up but now it sounds like something they would like to see. Thanks again Nancy
