That may have to wait until fall or winter, but when I write it I will include the story of Jim Baum Gaskill.Philiphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01572532603071469799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559692.post-78330226068699156712011-07-25T22:13:34.216-04:002011-07-25T22:13:34.216-04:00I found a couple of Philip Howard ink and watercol...I found a couple of Philip Howard ink and watercolor prints from the late 80's in the PTA thrift this week! Maybe you could tell us the story of Jim Baum (sp?) Gaskill which was a tragic part of that era.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559692.post-58651932829182262372011-07-25T08:18:01.952-04:002011-07-25T08:18:01.952-04:00My comment above and the one following were sent a...My comment above and the one following were sent at nearly the same time. I hope my comment answered the questions about Blanche's recollections. I have heard similar stories from many older residents.Philiphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01572532603071469799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559692.post-52209534255854804772011-07-25T08:13:12.846-04:002011-07-25T08:13:12.846-04:00Philip--I've heard the tales of U-boat activit...Philip--I've heard the tales of U-boat activities off the coast of Ocracoke during WW II, but your comment in today's post about Cousin Blance raises a question--what are her eyewitness recollections of those days on the island?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559692.post-58002584606433696342011-07-25T08:12:58.566-04:002011-07-25T08:12:58.566-04:00I was born in 1944 (and remember, my father left t...I was born in 1944 (and remember, my father left the island in 1927 to work up north) so I don't remember the Navy being on Ocracoke. However, I have often heard older folks talk about hearing the explosions off shore when a merchant ship was torpedoed. Windows would rattle, and black smoke would rise up in the air. Attacks at night would turn the sky red from burning oil. During the war there was much less vegetation on Ocracoke...and from the edge of the village (about where the Pirate's Chest gift shop is today) all the way to the surf there was almost nothing but tidal flats. So the attacks were often clearly visible from many porches.Philiphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01572532603071469799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559692.post-9685735317678524732011-07-25T07:31:17.837-04:002011-07-25T07:31:17.837-04:00A casual internet search of the word ammunition du...A casual internet search of the word ammunition dump raises some eyebrows. As a dump is used to refer to ammunition stored for immediate use , in the field and often considered a Target for the enemy to consider to take out. So, hense the guards as these are explosive materials .. so the fact the buildings were removed and the target removed --the residents were no longer in danger of enemy attack. To think the sleepy little village of OI was a target during those years.... er did you ever sleep on pins and needles??Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559692.post-6460420088451454932011-07-25T06:32:09.204-04:002011-07-25T06:32:09.204-04:00Well, you cleared up some confusion I've had a...Well, you cleared up some confusion I've had about the ammunition dump .....I, too, wasn't sure if "spent ammunition" was disposed in that location (although I hoped not!) or, if was an area for storage of live ammo.

Now, I know. Thanks, PH!

I'm trying to remember if Sunset Blvd is the ONLY Blvd on the island.... :) It's humorous to me that any street on O.I. would be named Blvd!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
