As it turned out, the required maintenance was not sustained over two decades, and the lease program has been suspended (I believe only one house has a remaining lease). <br /><br />In the past there were other "communities" on Portsmouth, but I think no other structures remain in other areas except for isolated fishing and hunting shacks (if I am wrong about that, perhaps someone will correct me). <br /><br />Portsmouth is open to visitors year around. However, volunteers spend only summer months on the island. They open various buildings to the public then.
