To All of our Faithful Readers

During the last fifteen years I have written and published more than 4,500 articles on this site celebrating Ocracoke Island history, culture, traditions, and people. It has been a labor of love for this special place. Now it is time to take a rest.

I will no longer be publishing blog posts five days per week. I may occasionally post stories or interesting island historical facts as they occur to me. To be notified when I publish a post simply add your email address in the box at the top right and click "submit."

Also, all past posts will remain in the archives. Simply click on any year in the archives to find posts that you may have missed or have forgotten about.

It has been a joy and a pleasure to share so many fascinating stories with interested visitors, Ocracoke residents, and native islanders. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all of our faithful readers. I hope this blog has enriched your understanding of Ocracoke Island, and helped connect you with the fascinating and colorful history that makes our community so special.

Be sure to follow Village Craftsmen on Facebook. Our Facebook page will continue to share island news, photos, stories, and information about storms and hurricanes as they unfold.

  1. Well, I always knew this day was coming...either voluntarily or involuntarily (know one is getting younger!). Philip, thanks for sharing island history and stories for all these years. Your labor resulted in a nifty and informative corner in cyberspace for those of us who only get to visit one of our favorite places.

Many thanks for the countless hours you have spent writing these interesting articles and insights into island life. I will definitely miss the frequent posts, but I can certainly understand your decision, no doubt it does take a lot of time. I'll be signing up and looking forward to getting notifications of future posts, whenever they do come. Thanks again!

Excuse me but this is a National Treasure. That young'un you mention every now and then is going to need some community service hours to impress those colleges he will apply to. Having said that, if he takes on topics writes about them --because young people have to get interested in history- that app thing will look good on a resume for that other wunderkid of yours- Soooo, Young man up the game and apply for a grant from the NC tourism dept and start your career in adv, tourism, public relations fund raising or dare I say History is not Just for Old people. Social media can have a dark side but SHINE the Light on the GOOD Word insta--gram and pod casts thats it Pod cats Whatever Phillip try a POD CAST !!!! Thank you for your service I remain DD

  8. First thank you for all your articles that our family has enjoyed reading. Our yearly visits to Ocracoke will continue our only regret is that we do not have any type of social media. So we will not be getting any updates from our beloved island. We will see you this summer but we will truly miss all your lovely stories.

  9. Philip, Amy...A daily clicking onto this blog will be missed. Loving Ocracoke began when Amy sold me a snow cone from the slushy stand in the late 70's/early 80's. My trips to Ocracoke a couple of times a year were eagerly awaited. The thousands of pictures that I have taken there over the past 40+ years enhance some of my most valuable memories. The questions and comments that I have made to you have been MANY and you have always taken the time to respond. THANK YOU Philip. The writings contained in this blog have enhanced my life. We all have to move on. I wish you and your family only the best. My sign off has always been ' A Daily reader or NS..Thank you again. Norman Scalise

  11. Phillip,
I have enjoyed your posts for many many years. As Robert Frost said in more eloquent words that I could ever muster (though I do try ;-) ) Nothing golden ever stays. Your words and posts have truly been gold for me and many many other people over the years...

As always, I hope to bump into you at the VERY least and hopefully we'll have a moment to sit and chat over a libation or two.

  12. I've loved all of the articles I've read over the years, and while I'll selfishly miss the regular posts, a bit of a reprieve from the task of daily posting is deserved. I'll still enjoy going back and reading old posts.

Philip, Even though you don't know me, I feel like I know you, and your family! It is truly incredible to think that you have written 4500 articles. Ocracoke is a fascinating place, and full of history and interesting things, but it is small. To come up with 4500 posts, ALL of which were interesting is a work of love. You did an outstanding job. I have always considered you to be the greatest spokesman and statesmen representing the island. There are lots of great people on that tiny little pile of sand, but no one has done more to promote and encourage a love for the island than you have. May you enjoy the Holiday season. We'll enjoy your posts when you do have time to post something. We'll miss you on a daily basis!
