Lou Castro, Marcy Brenner, David Tweedie, Martin Garrish, Kitty Mitchell and others work with island children regularly to keep the island music tradition alive. There are several youth bands (with guitars, of course, but also with flute, keyboard, violin, & drums). Aaron Caswell, who will be graduating in just a few days, is now an extremely talented guitarist with his own home-grown band. <br /><br />The median Ocracoke age is probably similar to the nation as a whole. We don't have as many retirees as some seaside communities because of our distance from medical services. There are about 135 children in school (pre-K through 12th grade).
