Whale

About 8:30 Saturday morning Amy called me from her cell phone. She and her friend Jennifer were walking on the beach, and they had spotted a whale, near the NPS campground. I drove out there right away. The whale was fairly far off shore (even Amy & Jen had just caught a glimpse of its immense body), and by the time I got there we could only see the periodic spouting of exhaled air from its blowhole. But it was exciting, nevertheless, just to know that one of these majestic creatures was nearby.

If you will be walking along our beach be sure to keep your eyes out for whales, especially during the winter months.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is the story of a 1911 wedding on Portsmouth Island. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news022111.htm.

What a great, fog-shrouded, other-worldy view via the Teach's Hole Web cam this morning: http://ocracokeharborinn.com/webcam_teachs.html. And is it just me, or has the Silver Lake Harbor Web cam been down for awhile now?

Yes, Anon, I've also noticed the Silver Lake Harbor Web Cam has been down for at least a week or two. Hope it'll be up and working soon! Philip, any updates about it?

Re: the whale sighting....Wow! I can't imagine what it must be like to actually see a whale that close to Ocracoke Island....one of those most amazing moments, I would think.

Glad Amy notified you via cell phone.

One day, maybe you will get that precious photo your bloggers would love to see of a whale! Something for us to look forward to....Just need that "majestic" whale to swim closer to shore....and smile!

    Thanks for sharing...

  3. As you might imagine, I seldom look at Ocracoke web cams. I just go out to the harbor, or the beach, or Teach's Hole to see what's going on. I have not heard anything about why one or more of the web cams is not working. Maybe one of our readers knows.

No, Philip,I don't blame you for never going inside a building and taking a view of Ocracoke through the "eyes" of a computer web-cam! After all, you have the "real thing"....right here in NC!

Sadly, your mainlander bloggers are not as fortunate and have to depend on web-cams! :) Oh, and your blog, of course!!!
