A Resort Community?

Sometimes journalists, newscasters, and others will describe Ocracoke as a "resort community." It is not. Ocracoke is a year-round community of nearly 800 citizens...citizens, to be sure, who are accustomed to welcoming visitors, especially in the summer season. However, we work together as a community throughout the year to ensure that our children are well educated, that our families and neighbors are supported, that our property is protected, that our needs are communicated to elected officials, and so forth.

Tomorrow, Friday, October 16, Ocracoke Child Care is sponsoring a fund raiser. They are offering chicken barbecue and baked goods at the Community Center from 4:30 until they run out of food. I can't remember the cost, but whatever it is, it will be a bargain (and will help support Ocracoke Child Care).

So, whether you are a year-round member of this community, or a visitor, come on out to the Community Center tomorrow for good food...and a good cause.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is a reprint of an article Philip wrote about sailing aboard the historic two-masted schooner, Mary E. It was originally published in the Washington Post in 1976. You can read it here:

Of course Ocracoke is a resort community. This community resorts to any means to have fun live life to the fullest-- you just mentioned in a previous response how Islanders resort to any means to avoid the mainland rules LOL. Wait that is My t-shirt message --you can send my portion of the profits to the Volunteer Firefighters fund.

  2. Philip,
So glad to know that the reality is that Ocracoke is the farthest thing from a resort community! That's why we love it there...if it were a resort community, we'd be doing a 180.

If people want a resort community...then need Myrtle Beach. That's what they need.

    Philip-

That was a good blog. My wife & I first went to Ocracoke in June 2008. We have been back twice since then. We have been married for 31 years and finally found our favorite vacation spot. Our friends and family go to Florida, Myrtle Beach and other popular places. We'll just leave Ocracoke our little non-resort secret.

ocracoke is our family secret place to vacation also. My husband and his family vacation there when he was young now we take our kids there..it is one of the last places on earth were a family can be a family and kids can be kids , play in the ocean, chase lightning bugs in the evening, learn how to fish, and here is the ironic thing all those things are free...so who needs a resort ,,not me, give me ocracoke..

Hey Philip, talking about journalists - you mentioned a journalist from "Brigitte" in an earlier blog who was on the island a while ago. Do you know when the respective article will be published? Wouldn't want to miss it. Best wishes from Berlin, Jule

  6. Jule -- it's nice to be reminded that I have wonderful international readers! If I remember correctly the Brigitte article is scheduled to be published sometime next spring. If I get any other information I'll let you know. Hope all is well in Berlin.
    Tschuss!
