1911 Wedding on Portsmouth Island

We've just published our latest Ocracoke Newsletter. This month we share an account of a wedding that took place on Portsmouth Island nearly one hundred years ago. It is entitled "A Beautiful Church Wedding on Portsmouth Island, Fifty-Seven Years Ago" and was written by M. Mason Daniels in1968. In addition to the story of the wedding, the bride shares many fascinating memories of life on this now abandoned island at the turn of the twentieth century.

    Hello,

I’m a life-long Ocracoke vacationer and have always enjoyed your blog and newsletter. I wanted to tell you that the most recent post about the wedding on Portsmouth was one of the most romantic things I’ve ever read! Maybe because having visited Portsmouth, I wanted to hear a story like that, as I stared at the church thinking of the love (and sorrow) that had been enjoyed there by so many.

This article makes me want to daydream all day about magical, more innocent times and old weddings! Love it! I especially love the bit about the couple that courted for 50 years and never married due to the argument about the living arrangements, 2 miles apart. Would have loved to have met those people, they sound like interesting folk!

Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!

    Sincerely,

    Rachel
