My Howard Street neighbors, Kathy & Bob Phillips, recently shared a number of vintage Ocracoke Island photos they obtained from the North Carolina State Archives. This one, of the Ocracoke Lighthouse, is a stark, almost haunting image. And, I don't remember having seen it before.
I didn't know where this photo was taken, or whose house was in the foreground. But, of course, Cousin Blanche recognized the house right away. The house belonged to Ruth Bragg. Sam Jones' "Homeplace" on the southwest shore of Silver Lake is on that location today.
Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is an article by island resident, Crystal Canterbury, about her very first visit to Portsmouth Village, on the last day of 2014. You can read Part I here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news042115.htm.

Beautiful photo. Speaking of old houses, can you update us sometime on the house that was sold through the OPS and is being redone on the road leading to the lighthouse? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteLook for photos tomorrow (4/30/15).
DeleteBlanche needs to record a pod cast/ audio commentary for a walking tour of OI. Attention anyone with old photos in the attic please make an appointment with Blanche so she can see the photos ,identify the photos, add to any body of knowledge regarding the time period the vintage photos capture And of course she might appreciate a gift card or too at a local restaurant in return. !!
ReplyDeleteThe tree does give the picture an eerie quality.
ReplyDeleteIs it still standing?
I'm not sure if that tree is still standing. I will take a look sometime in the next several days. But I do know that the scene is not as stark today.
