Holiday Doings

One question visitors to Ocracoke often ask is "What do you do around here when we're gone?" The answer, of course, is "We miss you!" But here are some of the other things we'll be doing this week.

Thursday, December 15 - Ocracoke School's  Christmas program, 7:00, in the (new) gym. This is our school's annual "thank you" to the community.

Friday, December 16 - The Holiday Basketball Tournament beings (also in the new gym.) Games begin at 2 PM Friday and 11 AM Saturday with the trophy presentation at 5 PM. Bring staples and canned goods for Outer Banks families in need this Christmas.

Saturday, December 17 - Ocracoke Library's Cookie Swap at 11 AM. This will involve readings and singing as well as the exchanging of lots of delicious calories. And the Friends of the Library will be conducting a book sale at the same time.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is the story of Ocracoke and the "Lost" Colony. You can read it here:

Philip, I love the "we miss you part!" :) I would imagine the weeks leading up to Christmas are very special and cherished times. How wonderful Ocracoke Island has such a variety of events and traditions in the month of December.

This NC Mainlander would love to be there.

Are the public restrooms open for all of these events?

  3. The Oyster Roast will also be on 12/30 this year. Its a fun chow down! Check out for more info.

The easiest way to find out what happens on Ocracoke in the winter is to come on down! I love coming out in the winter! I'll be chowing oysters, doing some radio at, and hanging 'round the fire pit at Zillie's!

Miss us? Ha! I bet you guys celebrate when our numbers are fewer! ;-) I work in a college town, and we all breathe a sigh of relief when they go home for summer and over breaks. Of course their being around provides us with things we otherwise wouldn't have in town...much like Ocracoke I'm sure.
