This Friday...

...Marcy & Lou (of the musical duo Coyote), and Gary & Fiddler Dave (of Molasses Creek) will be performing at Howard's Pub, starting at 8:30 pm. Ocracoke Island has a long tradition of home-grown live music. Other local groups (playing rock, country, folk, jazz, and more) perform regularly around the island. We may not be able to list every musical performance, but if any of our local entertainers has a special event planned please leave a comment and we'll post it.

On your next stroll down Howard Street be sure to look over the graveyard fence and notice Edgar Howard's tombstone. I have mentioned Edgar several times before in this journal. He and his brother, Walter, played in New York City in the the '20s & '30s with stars such as Al Jolson, Milton Berle, and Gene Autry. His marker has a banjo carved into it, with the words, "You ain't heard nothing yet!"

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is the story of the wreck of the Victoria S, and Ocracoke's first automobile accident. You can read it here.

    Hi, Philip,
We are coming down on Saturday to stay the week and will miss the performance on Fri night. (Darnit!)
We saw Marcy and Lou perform last summer and loved them. We will only be there from Saturday to the following Friday morning. (not nearly long enough, of course) Any chance to see them or any of the other talented Ocracoke folks this weekend or during the week? (We were there for a week in the beginning of May; the "off" season is great since it's not as crowded, but we do miss out on some of the festivities!)
    Thanks, Cathy McDonald, Hagerstown, Md

  2. Cathy, I believe that Martin Garrish and friends will be playing at the Pub on Monday evening. And as far as I know Marcy, Lou, Gary, & David are still playing on Sunday evenings at the Jolly Roger on the waterfront. But I could be wrong about these schedules. Things change as we get along into the off-season. Take a look at the signboards at various restaurants, etc. after you get on the island. Also check out the signboard at Deepwater Theater on School Road. Maybe you can catch an Opry performance, or Molasses Creek show. Enjoy!

Thanks, Philip! Actually, we can hear the music from the Jolly Roger from the back proch (pizer in the back also?)of our cottage on British Cemetery Road. Not necessarily well enough to know exactly who it is, but music nonetheless! We will check that out! Hope to see you at Village Craftsmen.

Any music scheduled for October yet? We are coming down for a quick weekend refresher and catching marcy, lou, dave, and gary or some combination thereof somewhere would just make the trip that much better! Thanks for any insight! Hope to see you soon...

  5. The last week of Deepwater Theater performances is the week of Sept. 28. The Opry is on Wed. Oct. 1, and Molasses Creek is Thurs. Oct. 2. Other than that, it's best to check with restaurants. Martin Garrish might be playing on Monday nights at the Pub in October, but I'm not sure. And I don't know how late in the season there will be music at the Jolly Roger.
