July 22

If you happen to see Lou Ann as you are wandering around the village today be sure to wish her a Happy Birthday! We went to the beach early this morning to watch the sunrise (maybe Lou Ann will share a photo or two sometime soon), then stopped by the Pony Island Restaurant for breakfast.

Tonight Amy & David are planning a family cookout with hamburgers and all the fixin's...including my usual -- deviled eggs-- and root beer floats!

Happy Birthday Lou Ann!

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is the story of the 1913 wreck of the George W. Wells. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news072110.htm.

I was shocked to read on a poster at the dentist that root beer has the highest caloric value in the soda department. Are people on the island for the most part fit and trim and exercise jog and do yoga and grow their own vegetables and live above average healthy lifestyles??

Happy Birthday Lou Ann! Yum Yum! I can taste it now! A cookout will be fun and it is so hot that a root beer float will cool you off. Have a good birthday cookout and don't worry about the calories! Eat cake too!

We will be vacationing next week and would love to bring the family for a bit of clamming. Can you shed some light on which area we should go on Okracoke? Thanks

  8. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Lou Ann! I hope that your birthday is all you hope for and I'm so glad that you're recovering from your back surgery so well...enough to spend your birthday in Ocracoke with Philip. Wishes for many more!

  9. Thank you all for such nice birthday wishes. It was a wonderful day complete with watching the sunrise with Philip. (He only does this once a year!) Last year on my birthday I was getting my purple cast on my arm! However, this is a new year and so far, nothing is broken! I appreciate all of your wishes and concerns, you are all great friends! la

  10. Re. clamming on Ocracoke: simply find a shallow area in the sound, push your rakes ahead of you lightly, and push down & pull back after you hear the distinctive "clink" when the tines pass over a clam. I can't broadcast specific areas that are good clamming spots or my neighbors would vote me off the island.

Why is it the Working Watermen Association want to continue the dangerous( to sea turtles ) use of gill nets they oppose the ban on gill nets Also can we get an update on the fish house and the restoration of that?

  13. Re. the Working Watermen's Association: this issue warrants a full Monthly Newsletter article. I may not get to it for a while, but I'll be working on it.
