Phone Call

Yesterday afternoon I received a phone call from my grandson, Lachlan. He wanted me to come over to his house and yard...and try to find him and his dad.

I thought they were in the tree house, waiting to ambush me with water balloons, but as it turned out they were quietly sitting on the roof of their house, enjoying a snack! No water balloons. I thought briefly about joining them, but decided instead to walk across the lane to visit Blanche.

There are always exciting adventures when you are 8 years old.

  2. Someone just showed me shark tracker. Have you seen that website? http://sharks-ocearch.verite.com/. If you select Sharks: Mary Lee, Tracking Activity: Past Month, it shows Mary Lee surfaced enough for GPS to catch ... she was in the Pamlico Sound off Ocracoke (quite a ways off) Jan. 24th at 4:05pm. She's way up north now. Thought it was interesting!

The sign, the sign on the fence is the house for sale? If so, do you know the listing price or the address? is it listed with a realtor with a web site?

    1. The house is not for sale. That house was my Uncle Marvin & Aunt Leevella's house. It is now owned by my cousins, and is a weekly rental cottage (listed by Ocracoke Island Realty as Diabando Cottage).

Lachlan is so blessed to have the opportunities of adventure that he does. I love when you share them with us.

As I walked by their house yesterday I could hear Lachlan calling to me but I couldn't find him! Luckily David spoke up and I heard him up there on the roof enjoying the warm, sunny afternoon. On one hand I thought that it was a great, fun way to appreciate the beautiful day. But the Mother in me worried about tumbling down ... sigh.

    1. You should have walked by when Lachlan was dancing on the roof! (He really wasn't in any danger. He was only on the roof just above the porch roof.)

What a cute picture. Reminds me when I was little and running around the islander's yards, waving hellos, digging my toes in the sand and finding dimes, nickles and sometimes a quarter. Islanders going to meet the "mail boat" was the highlight of the day. Ocracoke is one of the most refreshing, congenial and heavenly places on earth. Becky

Hooray for the roof sitters/dancers! If I were present I would have been inclined to teach Lachlan how to howl like a werewolf to scare unsuspecting passersby.
Better that I am not a bad influence on a wonderful young impressionable mind.

Philip, a question about house names. Is it my imagination or is it that only rental houses on Ocracoke are "named?" Seems every rental we have stayed at was named and houses which appear to be owner occupied are not. As always, thanks for the very interesting journal you share.

    1. Julie, I've never given much thought to this, but many (most? or even all?) rental cottages have names (I guess renters like to feel personal about their cottages...and a name is easier to remember than a number). There might be some residents who have named their homes, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. However, some, like my house, have historical plaques to identify them. My home is the "Bragg/Howard House."

My Uncle Marvin & Aunt Leevella's house (now a rental cottage) is named after Uncle Marvin's dog, Diabando.

Many, if not most, of the rental homes along the outer banks have names. Not sure if other areas do the same or not.

and I am glad Bobby did not see this pic. No need for my daredevil to get any ideas ;) LOL actually, given that we almost always have a cat on our roof, I'm surprised he hasn't realized the tree next to the porch would provide easy access to it LOLOL
