Ferry

This photo was taken about 1955, just as we were about to board the Hatteras Inlet ferry.

The ferry was owned and operated by Hatteras Island native, Frazier Peele. You can read about the Peele family, and see more vintage photos, here: http://www.hatterasgear.com/oldhatte.html.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is a brief history of the Soundfront Inn, one of the oldest structures on the island. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news102113.htm.

  1. It looks as though the ferry ride was a bit more of an adventure than it is today. Thanks for all the interesting stories and tales of the long list of characters on the island. And best wishes to all for the holdiays!

It's a wonder any of us survived to the modern era!

    ;-)

    A pleasure--as always.

While I would love to "go back" and experience things the way "they used to be" in the "good old days", I have to admit I would probably have been a little fearful getting on board that ferry. But, how wonderful it must have been back then. I know you islanders must have such mixed emotions. How great that we now have modern living, but we constantly lament that we can't go back to a simpler way of life. Thanks for the blog. I read it daily and it keeps me in touch with that little piece of paradise.

Progress, development, prosperity, poverty, life of leisure, ill at ease, health or rampant disease ,hand in hand or out of step ,at the edge of the world and into the depths. Another day another dollar all for the team stand up and holler.
