PH the fifth anniversary of the explosion of fireworks en route to the festivities on OI is this year. Are there reports as to how efforts in your community raising funds has helped those left behind on the mainland? When ever I see a roadside stand this time of year hawking fireworks I think of how many people are injured in backyards by poorly manufactured firecrackers and the like. I hope everyone has a safe holiday.DD
ReplyDeleteI have not heard anything recently about the survivor of the explosion, or about family members of those who died. Maybe one of our readers has information.
DeleteI may be wrong but it seems to me that years ago, on July 4th, there were crab races on some kind of platform or track. I am pretty sure it was on Ocracoke. I haven't seen them in a while. Am I wrong? Was it Ocracoke? I remember a crowd of people watching this event. It was fun. The crabs had numbers on their backs and anyone could enter it against another entry. All that was required was that you caught your crab in the lake, it had to be a certain size, and you had t have a number on it. The prize was small but that wasn't the objective. The thing was that it was a crab race on the 4th of July. Does any of this ring a bell or was I in another time and place and an trying to connect it to Ocracoke?? Thanks
ReplyDeleteYou are remembering correctly. In the mid 1980s Ocracoke held an annual Crab Fest that included crab races. It was a fun event, but beer was served, and the Crab Fest started to evolve into a weekend party that was becoming difficult to manage. The community eventually decided to look for other ways to celebrate & have fun.
Deletethank you for the info.....
