On June 30, 1978 The Washington Post published an article by Angus Phillips. It was titled "Ocracoke Is an Island Unto Itself "

Phillips includes this exchange with Thurston:

"I worked a couple of months on a dredge boat in Delaware Bay when I was 18," said Gaskill. "I got to see a little of how the city folks lived and then I turned around and sniffed my way back home like a dog. Been here ever since. It hasn't changed much."

This month's Ocracoke Newsletter is a transcription of a letter describing the September, 1944, hurricane, its aftermath and cleanup. You can read the letter, with vintage photographs added, here: www.villagecraftsmen.com/news102117.htm.

    1. Even though this post was published October 26, 2017, I wrote it some time ago. I must have the newspaper in my files somewhere. Will look for it, but it may be a while before I find it!
