Out and About

On Wednesday I drove to New Bern to pick up Lou Ann. She had a lot going on and didn't make it to the island for the Festival this year. But already she has been out and about on Ocracoke. She's taught herself how to upload videos to her blog, and she has decided to make a short daily (or almost daily) video while she is here. She published her first one yesterday. It is an interview of Bill Jones and me in one of the Howard Street graveyards. Here is the link to Lou Ann's blog: http://louannhoman.blogspot.com/. Enjoy!

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is Molly Lovejoy's 2012 Ocracoke School Valedictory Address. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news062112.htm

Talk about "the talkies"--your first online video appearance, a la "Jolson Speaks." How appropriate that his name should come up in your discussion. (The movie was "The Jazz Singer," by the way.) BRILLIANT idea. And another blog post to look forward to.

And how wonderful to hear a trace of the Ocracoke brogue in your voice.

As I've said before, ALWAYS a good reason to come back.

    Philip,

I just read some of your older newsletters and one of them mentions kayaking to HOG ISLAND. It didnd't sound too far off the island and might be a place to kayak out to on our next trip to Ocracoke. I tried to google it but not much came up and no real location could be found.
WHERE IS IT? WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GHET THERE? HOW FAR IS IT FROM THE OCRACOKE COAST GUARD STATION?
ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED. THANKS.

Right, I've heard of hog island. I'd like to know myself. Where is hog island? Philip can you help us locate this place?

  5. I believe there are two islands in Dare County named "Hog Island." I don't know anything more about them.

Hog Shoal is located about 1/2 mile west of Ocracoke Island (about half way between the village and South Point).

A small boat is the best way to get there.
