The Lehigh

Wednesday's post was about the dredge Merritt.  It reminded me of the Lehigh.

Visitors to Ocracoke on the Swan Quarter or Cedar Island ferries often wonder about the two large objects protruding from the edge of the ferry channel not far from Ocracoke.

These are spuds attached to the sunken dredge, Lehigh.

You can read more in a post I published a year ago: http://villagecraftsmen.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-lehigh.html.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is a brief history of the Soundfront Inn, one of the oldest structures on the island. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news102113.htm.

Is this navigational hazard listed on vintage nautical charts. I say vintage due to the fact -from what i understand nautical charts will no longer be printed!!! there goes another document from the hands o the public only those with means ( a computer and a printer to download etc) will have the knowledge. There was a time of sailing ships men sought their fortunes on other shore s of land and sea. Will the circle be unbroken?

  2. You can see the Lehigh (Wk PA) on this chart, http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/11550.shtml, just to the left of 76 degrees at the top right hand corner of the chart.

It's kind of shocking to think that during those 71 years since the sinking no one has tried to blow up or pull out or topple over the remains to make things safer and not a eye sore or is it part of the tourist attraction package?
