The Wahabs of Ocracoke Island

We have published another Ocracoke Newsletter. This month's article is about the Wahab family of Ocracoke, and research about their origins...Arab or Scotch-Irish?

You can read the current Newsletter here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news022115.htm.

Philip, I just read where the 'spring crab festival' in Ocracoke can't be missed' what does this mean? is there a crab festival in the spring on Ocracoke?

Also someone showed me a decoy they bought at a yard sale in Columbia while they were heading to the OBX a couple of years ago. It is a solid wood, not a canvas type pintail drake and on the bottom it has 'howard' carved in the wood. Is this something you might be connected with or just another Howard, or a prank? Anyone in your family ever carve decoys?

    1. I have posted information about the Crab Festival (1984-1989) here: http://villagecraftsmen.blogspot.com/2014/07/newsletter-ocracoke-crab-festival.html. Be sure to follow the link to my Newsletter about the Festival.

The decoy you mention may be one carved by Lawrence or Stacy Howard. Stacy was cousin Blanche's father. Of course it could have been carved by some other Howard. I would be happy to tell you what I know if you can send a photo. Use the email address on this page: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/contact.htm.
