Photo Quiz 1

I recently had an opportunity to view a number of older island photographs. I borrowed three to scan and post on our blog. This first photo is of a classic island home, once owned by a prominent 20th century islander and his wife.

The house and property remain in the family. Some renovations have been made to the house, but it retains its beauty and charm.

Please leave a comment if you think you can identify this home or if you have any noteworthy stories to share about the property or the former residents.

I will publish a recent photograph of this house on tomorrow's post. And look for the other two photos in the days ahead.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is Ellen Marie Cloud's first person account of the "Great Ocracoke Lighthouse Windows Heist." You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news012117.htm.

Oh my, there you go again. Another image of islanders with awesome fashion sense. The day dress the Lady of the house is wearing -- a print-- could help date the decade. My fabric timeline says the 50's plus the photo is in color and hmmm, color photos became very popular in the 60's....Could there be another photo from the collection that gives us a better look at the outfit.

Philip, I live in greensboro and receive the coastlant times paper around 2 weeks after it it mailed! yes it take me 5 hrs to drive to the obx but 2 weeks to get the paper..anyway. in the jan 22 front page was a article on the new beach driving rules. it says' 'revising the beach driving route to allow pedestrain use of a sound-side access on ocracoke island.' where is this pededtrain access? Are they talking about the trail at the water station across from the campground? There is no name connected to the story in the paper.

At a recent meeting with the superintendent of the Cape Hatteras Seashore, there was discussion about two (and eventually three) access points for the sound that did not require the off road vehicle permit; one is Devil Shoals Rd, across from the campground; the other is South Bitterswash Creek, near the pony pen. There'll be a parking area and a walkway to the sound. For more information you can look on-line at the Ocracoke Observer.
