First State Road

From The Daily Times-News, Burlington, NC, 16 Nov 1949:

"First Highway Machinery for Ocracoke Island – Isolated Ocracoke Island on North Carolina’s Outer Banks receives its first road-building machinery in history from Gov. Kerr Scott. He and a group of state officials visit the 18-mile-long island jutting out into the Atlantic ocean and present the machine to the island’s road committee….

"Ocracokers are not required to have state license on their automobiles since there are no state roads on the island. But they are glad to swap that distinction for all-weather roads to replace the sand trails. These roads will be built as part of the state’s $200,000,000 rural road program."

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is a history of the Ocracoke Lighthouse, with information (and an artist's sketch) about the earliest lantern room. You can read the Newsletter here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/ocracoke-lighthouse/

All dressed up, gee anon 8:59. Heavy sigh, there was a time men wore hats suits and ties Everyday! You didn't work on wall street you weren't a lawyer a president but the man next door. Now if you were a car mechanic baker, butcher painter, carpenter maybe not necessary to wear a hat coat and tie unless it was Sunday and you were attending a church service. Some companies as late as 1990, required paint store clerks to wear a Tie to work-- now everyone is "approachable" in a soft collared polo shirt. What can I say, the times they are a changing. Yesterday, I saw a small child with his pants falling down, hanging on his arse, A child distracted but young men deliberately exposing their boxer shorts seems soo Unsanitary and if this is a fashion statement I dare say they are distracted on some mind altering substance. Back to men in hats they were either the mayor county commission state federal level administrators I would like to know too I was just guessing as to their occupations. Speaking of occupations there is a federal publication called Occupational Outlook which is an economic forecast of occupational demand and includes what to expect in a career by category-- good luck it is no doubt in the reference section of a local library or On line!!!

one question exactly how much is
$2000,000.000 the commas and decimal points are screwy? is the decimal suppose to be another comma? are the 2 numbers before the first comma suppose to be there? I would like to know the true amount because now my interest is really up!

    1. The figure should be $200,000,000 (two hundred million dollars). I corrected the post. Thank you for alerting me.

Anon8:59&Al9:49 - Yes, Stanley Wahab. Wild guess - the black suits are from off-island. Second man from the right could be Ben Spencer.
