Steamboat Home

Today is the 173rd anniversary of the wreck of the Steamboat Home. Ninety people (men, women, & children) lost their lives when the grand and elegant "Home" came ashore on Ocracoke Island during a fierce hurricane on October 9, 1837. It was the worst sea disaster ever to occur on the North Carolina coast. To read the full story, as told by Walter Howard in 1952, click on the link below:
