Crime

I subscribe to Google Alerts. Anytime Ocracoke is mentioned on the web I receive a notification. Recently I saw this headline: "Compare Crime Rates, New York, NY -- Ocracoke, NC." So I clicked on the link (http://www.bestplaces.net/crime/?city1=53651000&city2=53748740).

This is what appeared! (According to the web site, "The crime indices range 1-100. A higher number corresponds with more crime. Our crime rates are based on FBI data.") --

Violent Crime in Ocracoke.............61.2
Violent Crime in New York City....63.5
Violent Crime in the US..................41.4

Property Crime in Ocracoke...........71.2
Property Crime in New York City..31.7
Property Crime in the US................43.5

I suppose the FBI has been investigating murders, rapes, burglaries, arson, and violent assaults on Ocracoke that I was just not aware of! How could I have missed this mayhem right under my nose?

Isn't the Internet just wonderful.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is the story of late 19th century steamship traffic to Ocracoke, and the large Victorian hotel that accommodated the guests. You can read the article here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news082114.htm.

It is called clickbait. And I suppose this is another device to garner hits to bamboozle advertisers to hand money to the web page "author"

A more reliable source of info is Ocracoke Current --there is a police blotter section which provides an eye opening picture of the violations which necessitate a ticket. Just saying it ain't August no more :) :O

Sounds like this info is about as true as some of the political ads on TV today!!

Maybe they read some of your earlier posts about about pirates hanging out at Springer's Point and "those lawless bankers" on OI. :-D

Y'all need to know that there IS a covert FBI field office on OI located in the basement of Howard's Pub. They are on high alert due to receiving some chatter about a terrorist plot to blow up the Ocracoke Lighthouse and cripple the commercial shipping lanes that bring crude oil to the secrete refineries on OI. The ferry attendants are trained by the FBI to take notice of any dangling wires and such from vehicles and track all persons coming onto Ocracoke.
I'd divulge more, but I must go. The aliens are chewing my toenails.

Does the FBI use a new exclusive decimel system...if so, perhaps they could be persuaded to teach it to my bank.

I'd like to say I purposely misspelled decimal (decimel with an e) because it would be a different system, but I can fess up, I don't work for the government, I simply just made a mistake. I'm usually a verry good speler....anon.1:32

We haven't had a murder in a long while, but rape, burglary (bicycle theft! breaking into rental cottages!), and domestic and drunken violence happen everywhere including Ocracoke. There's a rape investigation going on right now. And we did have an act of arson a few years ago.

I think i'll stay right here in Long Island (NY) it's peaceful........I would tell you my community but then the drifters would move in.......ocracoke should do the same....town down your advertising....you were a secret until all the slick magazines knocked on your door.....I was there twice. My little town is quieter and has was less signs and traffic. Want the name of my town- no way!

adding comments by voice have not been perfected as well as they'd like you to think....other than the auto correct which did not auto correct, I think you get my point above...sorry about the spelling. (I really do like Ocracoke, but I like my town better - too much of a crime wave down there)
