Waterfowl Hunting

This month's Ocracoke Newsletter is about Gary Bragg (1881-1954), waterfowl hunting, and decoy carving. I recently obtained a few photographs of one of Ocracoke's current hunting guides, Monroe Gaskill, and thought many of our readers would like to see them.

Here is Monroe in his skiff, heading out to his duck blind:

This is Monroe's blind, a small frame structure covered with limbs and brush erected in the Sound, in which the duck and goose hunters hide:

And this is Monroe, out in the shallow water, setting his decoys for the next hunting party:

(All photos by Bill Monticone.)

If you are interested in waterfowl hunting with Monroe, you can contact him at (252) 928-5751 or (252) 216-5284. But don't look for a web site. Monroe's expertise is duck hunting, not web design!!

Our current Ocracoke Newsletter is a 1938 article about Capt. Gary Bragg, waterfowl hunting, and wooden decoy carving. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news112116.htm.

Philip...How can you put a shelter like that out in the sound? Do you lease that spot from the state or park service? Are there ever any arguments of the best blind site...or are they all the same you just have to wait for them to fly in? thanks

    1. From http://www.ncwildlife.org/Portals/0/Regs/Documents/Game-Lands.pdf: "Waterfowl blinds may be constructed on most game lands; however, they become public property and can be used by anyone on a first-come, first-served basis." Of course, locals respect each other's labor and efforts.

If Hunter-builders know they have the "right" to build on Public/game lands and in doing so, One gives up the right to "ownership" and if Respect to the first-come first served Rule, dictated by the fair use of Public Lands and it is Followed there is no Problem/dissr-respect. This notion/Perception of "Respecting each other's labor and efforts" suggests there has been conflict . However, does it in actuality lead to an over population of duck blinds. With an unintended consequence of choice to All Unoccupied duck blinds. Even if a "local" builds a blind in a less desirable location he has Every Right to use an unoccupied duck blind in a more desirable location. Now all this "give and Take and "Not in "My" Duck Blind" how does one know a Duck Blind is in fact Occupied? Is there a tight knit group of Local duck Hunters and a Duck hunting Grape vine-- oh wait, they all have cell phone and are on a Listserv and e-mail one another. Perhaps, some that read this may think it a harsh comment but the thought that Public lands are here for use of everyone Begs the Questions . PH Noting that this unwritten local memorandum of Understanding (LMOU) and suggesting it disrespectful to do otherwise , what is the OI Hatfield and McCoy back story. How can a local justified being miffed by a Supposed transgression if in legality no such Trespass has been committed on PUBLIC lands. If The false notion of trespass when an action that is in fact exercising a Right translates into a retaliation are shots fired??? Or you get cold eggs at the Catter er Chatter box cafe.

    1. My comment had no suggestion of conflict, just common sense respect. There is no back story.

  4. Most people have this fear with sharks especially in murky waters. It is because movies have depicted sharks as blood thirsty hunters. People most often have this indescribable fear with sharks as a lethal killer. eshunting.wordpress.com

  5. Do you wish that you could be out in the field more often hunting? Rest assured that you are not the only one. There are many bow hunters out there that yearn for more time outside during the season. Click here
