Springer's Point & Portsmouth

I just heard a second-hand report that Springer's Point only lost a few limbs -- no trees down...but about 5 feet of beach washed away there.

I also heard that there was no major damage at Portsmouth village. Again, tree limbs down, maybe even a few trees blown over, but no report of significant damage to buildings. However, I did hear that the dock at Wallace's Channel was destroyed and probably won't be rebuilt.

Please keep in mind that these are second hand stories...not official reports.

Springer's Point is fine. The beach actually looks no different than after a strong north wind blows in the winter.

I'm relieved to hear this news about Springer's Point. It's such a special place and has a personal sentimental meaning for me and my late husband.

I will look forward to "hugging" those giant, twisted live oak trees the next time I'm visiting O.I.

  3. Thanks for the update. I spent a good bit of time at Springer's Point on my last visit to Ocracoke in March.

I'm off tomorrow to sail in Maine for 2 weeks, and won't have access to computers from the windjammer. Wishing you smooth sailing, too, and we'll all hope that Katia doesn't follow Irene's path up the coast!

Thanks for the update and really glad to hear that the Springer's Point live oaks made it through the storm. Some of the trees are so huge and their limbs so horizontal that they're amazing sights under the most calm of conditions. Just another example of the fact that God had been practicing before he created the island.
