Lighthouse Property

This past Sunday I posted a few paragraphs about our lighthouse and the hours it will be open this summer for viewing the interior. Below are a few more interesting facts about the lighthouse.

On April 2, 1930 the lighthouse property on Ocracoke Island consisted of:
  • 1 Lighthouse.............................$16,050
  • 1 Oilhouse.......................................500
  • 1 Dwelling....................................5,670
  • 1 Dwelling....................................7,000
  • 1 Coal Shed.....................................400
  •       Total...................................$29,620
The appraised value of the land was $1,000.

This information was quoted by Ellen Fulcher Cloud in her book, Ocracoke Lighthouse, from records in the custody of the Commissioner of the Revenue, in the Department of the Treasury.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is a list of a few traditional Ocracoke Island recipes. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news052112.htm.

Well, I'd say the land has increased in value quite a bit!
