Pelicans

A week or so ago Lida & Bill Jones treated their visiting family to a boat trip with Captain Donald Austin to Portsmouth Island. On the way back they stopped at Beacon Island to see the nesting pelicans. Lida says the baby pelicans were so cute, toddling around with their parents, but she didn't catch that on film. But she did make this photo of a pelican on its nest that she shared with me:

  1. A wonderful bird is the pelican,
It's beak can hold more then its belly can.
    Etc.
    Etc.
    Etc.

We stopped by on our way back from Portsmouth Island a couple years ago and it ws amazing how many pelicans were on Beacon Island. And they're so stately bobbing in the water, and majestic in the air, but pretty ungainly on land. I'm glad they've mostly made it through the last few hurricanes.

What a lovely picture. I especially like how Ocracoke is visible in the background. Just lovely. Thank you for sharing

  4. Great pic. pelicans are one of my favorite birds. My first trip on the Cedar I ferry we saw a lot of them setting on a little island.

Is Beacon Island the small island the Swan Quarter ferry passes just before reaching Ocracoke?

Oh how I miss the Outer Banks. We have a little cottage over at Hatteras Village on the sound side. I pretty much spent all my summers there while growing up. Once I get back to NC my family and I are heading back to Hatteras.

  8. Nollie, I've been so busy with the Festival and other things that I have no idea what aircraft was out at the air strip. Maybe one of our readers can answer your question.

  9. Anon 1:28 -- the island you are probably thinking of is a spoil island (created by dredging the channel and pumping sand up).

I, too, noticed O.I. in the background. Pelicans have always seem to be laid back and just plain contented to be, well, "to be". I feel welcomed & not so intrusive when I'm around pelicans. Wonderful, friendly birds!

Thanks for sharing this terrific pic!

Pelicans are very stately animals although on my Honeymoon at Orcacoke, my husband and I were on the docks to sign up for the Windfall cruise when low and behold I got splattered with pelican poo. Not a very pleasant experience. I guess if I was in England everyone would want to touch me as being pooed on by birds is considered Good Luck.
