This month's Ocracoke Newsletter is an analysis of a short paragraph penned by surveyor Jonathan Price in 1795. Price made this observation: ”Occacock was heretofore, and still retains the name of, an island. It
is now a peninsula; a heap of sand having gradually filled up the space
which divided it from the bank."
I was puzzled when I first read that sentence. In what sense, I wondered, was Ocracoke at one time an island, but had now become a peninsula?
The newsletter presents my analysis. You can read it here: https://www.villagecraftsmen.com/description-occacock-1795/.
