As most of our readers know, Charles Temple, our high school English teacher (that's right...he is our one and only high school English teacher) is a semi-finalist on Jeopardy's very first Tournament of Teachers.
Last week Charles bested his competition, scoring more than $20,000 (these are actually points, not dollars...my understanding is that tournament contestants' winnings are computed differently). Tonight he battles two of the other high scorers for a chance at the grand prize.
Tune in this evening and follow Charles' progress along with the rest of Ocracoke village. We are all cheering him on.
This month's Ocracoke Newsletter is the history of the Ocracoke Preservation Society. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news042111.htm.

Exciting!
Wouldn't miss it
ReplyDeletePhilip,
ReplyDeleteI was wondering, how do folks that work on Ocracoke in everyday kind of jobs, ie, middle class, find affordable housing? When I ride my bike around town on my visits there, I don't see much available that isn't high end rental properties.
Susie
Finding affordable housing on Ocracoke can be a challenge. There are a few monthly, year-round rentals available at rates more reasonable than weekly summer rates. Of course, a number of residents are from multi-generational families who have had land for quite a while. The Ocracoke Foundation has limited housing available for a few public service employees. Some business owners provide modest housing for employees. Other people are just plain creative.
ReplyDeleteAnd what a great job he did! On to the finals and best of luck to him.
ReplyDeleteCharles certainly has changed since the first time we met him on the "Windfall" maybe 14 years ago but then, haven't we all.
I was cheering Charles tonight as if I personally knew him! He did a fantastic job and to be in the BIG $100K FINALS is AMAZING!!!!
ReplyDeleteKeep going, Charles!!!!
Islanders and Mainlanders are pulling for you!
What an awesome job tonight Charles!!! We'll keep on rootin for ya! Way to represent NC and Ocracoke!
ReplyDeleteCharles is a bit behind going into this final round. I'm suggesting that he intimidate the other players by putting fuses in his beard and lighting them afire.
ReplyDeleteWorked for another island denizen; at least for a while!
