Mainland Fire

Smoke hangs over Ocracoke village this evening as an uncontrolled forest fire rages in mainland Dare County. You can read more here: http://hamptonroads.com/2011/05/nc-fire-scorches-7000-acres-alligator-river-refuge.

A 10 mile section of route 264 on the mainland is closed because of smoke and fire. Travelers are advised to be prepared for smoke and detours.

Yes, have been hearing about the out-of-control fire on Hyde/Dare line and wondering if the "fog shroud" on Silver Lake his morning is from the fire? It's very foggy here in the NC northern Piedmont just from temperature/weather changes, etc.

It seems this Monday morning the ferry system would have difficulty operating, but have noticed no reports posted on their web-site, as of 6:36 a.m.

Hope the fire (which is thought to have been ignited by lightning) will be under control soon.

Is the smoke any better this morning? I am in Frisco and it's awful, smoky/foggy like a creepy movie. We were planning to come to Ocracoke today but I think we are going to have to cut our vacation short because my son has asthma and I don't want to take unnecessary chances.
