Local Update Re. Govt. Shutdown

Dane Daniel, writer for the New York Times, had an article, "How the Shutdown is Affecting the Cape Hatteras Seashore" published on Monday. The article, about how the shutdown has impacted Ocracoke, is an accurate picture of the situation on the island. I thought our off-island readers, especially those planning a visit soon, would like to have this information.

Daniel points out that, "in practice, enforcement has been flexible, at least for beachgoers on foot.... [L]ike dozens of beachgoers from states up and down the East Coast, judging from the cars in the parking lot, [a visitor from Greenville, NC] passed the small closure sign next to a dune walkover and spent a relaxing day at the beach."

Island resident, Sundae Horn, adds, "officially the beach is closed, but...no one has been ticketed."

Observe posted closures. Observe posted closures is the first regulation to know and follow, other wise one is subject to a fine. LOL. What a joke, what a double standard. Employees are told to stay away but those showing a lack of respect, visitors/trespassers will-- fail to follow the directives. Oh, the island is so remote. Well, what about the people, our fellow Americans that planed a trip to the Grand Canyon . Why aren't these people/trespassers marching in protest in DC? I hope they are picking up trash and leaving nothing but footprints.

We enjoyed our time there as "civil disobedients". The weather was perfect when we were there. And we ALWAYS pick up trash when we are on the island - or any other natural setting made by God that we are blessed to be at.

The parking lot beside the campground is not roped off. My daughter and I enjoyed a nice walk on the beach on Monday morning. There were a few others there too. And I actually picked up quite a bit of other people's trash!

How much of the trash was recycled? The tons of garbage left by college football fans on an annual basis is a sad state of affairs for an Alma Mater-- I wonder if people remember what Alma Mater translates to in one's native tongue.DD

Yes we love the island, but this time a year I come with Friends that want to Fish (Surf Fish), in this economy they can't afford to Pay for Housing / Food etc. on the island plus pay for Boat Rental. So we will decide by tomorrow if we are postponing out trip this year. Although yes, they could walk to the beach, it would not be fun trying to carry all the fishing gear. I know of one other group that came to the island last Sunday to fish and pulled out on Monday. Hope we get to come this year, I need the R&R......
