Ocracoke Newsletter

We have just published our latest monthly Ocracoke Newsletter. This month I share an article (courtesy of the North Carolina Journal of Medicine) by Dr. Martin Rozear about the mid-1800s marine hospital on Portsmouth Island. It is a fascinating story of sailors and coastal North Carolina. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news082111.htm.

Very interesting article about the "lightering" of large ships outside Ocracoke Inlet and the consequent commerce at Portsmouth and Ocracoke. I'm supposing that this must have been work that the slaves did.

  2. Slaves did much (perhaps most) of the work lightering sailing vessels. I am researching slavery and Ocracoke for a future Newsletter. Look for it in the next month or so.
