Whatever Lola Wants...

I just recently heard about the YouTube video of Ocracoke resident Lida Jones' belly dancing performance at this summer's Ocracoke Women's Opry. Apparently it has been widely talked about on Facebook...but I'm not on Facebook, so it was new to me. For all of our readers who are not connected to Lida, here is the link:

Living on Ocracoke just encourages freedom and spontaneity, I guess. I don't think Lida was belly dancing when she was a preacher's wife.

This month's Ocracoke Newsletter, Looking for the Wahabs of Ocracoke, was written by Dr. James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute. You can read the article here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news082110.htm.

Post-Earl Question: What's the beachcombing like on the heels of a hurricane, Phillip? Just another day at the beach, or are things--terrain, types of finds, etc.--significantly different?

  3. I am going out to the beach this afternoon. Have heard that quite a few large shells and starfish washed up, but no doubt most of those have already been picked up. I want to see if the remains of the George W. Wells (wrecked Sept. 3, 1913) are still visible north of the Pony Pen.

We come next week, and I am hoping there are some fun things for my 2 year old to find after the storm. Phillip, are there any activities geared for her age group on the island? Thanks.

Sorry, she's too late for belly dancing class, but maybe Lida can give her private lessons.

  6. There are lots of broken shells on the beach, many of them interesting and fun for a two year old to colllect. Today we also found one very nice starfish (as well as a number that were broken), and a perfect moon snail. We also saw quite a few horseshoe crabs. There were great tidal pools between the beach and the outer sand bar -- more like a swimming pool than the ocean. If Lida won't give belly dancing lessons you can take your two year old out there for some fun in the water.

That Lida is something else! Guess she is getting some beneficial exercise. However, I am sure she didn't do much belly dancing when she was a preacher's wife!!!! She is appropriately dressed in the video for those who might have been hesitant to look! :)

Activites geared toward two-year-olds?!? Clearly this must be your first. I've had three of my own (now 20, 18, and 11), and I can spot others' at 300 yards without my reading glasses. The best organized activity for a two-year-old is chaos, and Ocracoke is naturally suited for it, with water and waves to chase in perpetual motion and miles and miles and miles and miles of seashells to pick up, each one shinier and more interesting than the last. Watch two-year-olds like a hawk in the waves, give them free rein (more or less) to prowl the sands, and they should sleep like...well, you know. Enjoy.
